Catheter based high dose rate sources has taken nowadays an important role in out-patient cancer treatments. At the present time, there is no detector system which can record accurate quantitative doses and spatial information for Brachytherapy sources. This is partly because of the short-range of the low energy beta emission of these sources having typically an average energy of a few hundreds of keV ; , and the resolution limitation of existing extrapolation chambers and radiochromatic-dye films currently the preferred method used ; . For the latter, transfer of data from one method to the other can lead to a loss of accuracy as high as 7%, well beyond the required 2% limits of current protocols. We have developed a scintillating fiber based beta detector prototype which will provide solution to this problem. It is composed of an array of 0.5 mm2 and 1 mm2 fibers optically coupled to photo-multiplier tubes for photon-to-current conversion. Preliminary results from high dose rate 90 Sr 90 and 32 Ru sources comparing film dosimetry, well chambers, and our scintillating fiber based detector will be presented.
Prostate cancer in layman's terms. I contacted Dr. Stephen Strum of the PCRI, and he generously agreed to write the medical text for this descriptive brochure. With the money coming in from the Blazing Trails project, we were able to produce and print 15, 000 copies that we distributed to each race entrant, to the press, and to various sponsor organizations for distribution to their employees. "All in all, we collected over , 500 with only 00 in expenses, so Project Blazing Trails was able to raise 00 for PCRI programs, plus the project was directly responsible for a brochure that describes the prevention and detection of prostate cancer in terms that a lay person can understand." Actually, the project did even better. The PCRI enhanced the brochure design, and the Life Extension Foundation proceeded to print 50, 000 complimentary copies that the PCRI has distributed nationwide in an outreach program to men at risk from prostate cancer. The Bioprospecting research group of CSIR focuses on the discovery and development of herbal remedies and prescription drugs based on South Africa's traditional medicinal plants as well as its rich biodiversity. Traditional Healers currently provide CSIR scientists with indigenous knowledge IK ; that stimulates research which can eventually lead to discovery and development of new herbal remedies. The rights of these providers of IK to share in future financial benefits that might be derived from commercial exploitation of any such products, is protected through a Memorandum of Understanding September 1999 ; and a Benefit Sharing Agreement February 2003 ; signed between the CSIR and the Traditional Healers Committee. After the retreat and expulsion of the Fenians from Canada, Denison's Cavalry continued for several months to Patrol the Niagara Frontier, between Fort Erie and Suspension Bridge. Nearly five months of hard, active service in the performance of day and night Patrols , keeping a close watch on the River and other military duties, had made a Veteran of Cornet Baldwin while still a very young man , and the impression made on him was to be a lasting one. On March 5th, 1867, he was promoted to be Lieutenant, and in 1872 succeeded Captain Armstrong in the command of the Troop. On April 24th, 1874, Captain Baldwin was permitted to retire retaining rank. On the breaking out of the North West Rebellion in 1885, Dr. Baldwin immediately offered his service as Surgeon to Col. Denison , and received the appointment in his old Corps and in that capacity accompanied the Body Guards to the North West , where he remained during the Campaign , returning home again at the close of the Rebellion. This short account of the Military career of Captain Baldwin will give future readers of these Records some idea of the man who was now to accept the difficult and important position of Adjutant to the Second Dragoons. Kentucky Youth Advocates, in alliance with the Anti-Bullying Alliance, has announced the implementation of a statewide Bullying Hotline to be held over a three-week period during the month of October. The safety and well-being of our children directly affects their ability to learn and perform in school. While research exists nationally on this topic, there is little information regarding how bullying affects Kentucky kids and their families. The purpose of the Bullying Hotline is to acquire personal perspectives and accounts of instances where bullying has occurred in the school setting and how the issue was addressed. DISCUSSION In this study, over-stimulation by FSH and LH was used as the experimental approach to synchronize and maximize ovarian changes. The rationale was to amplify the hormonedependent tissue response that usually follow the proliferation-apoptosis pathway along the ovarian cycle. The proliferative phases induced by FSH treatment promoted follicular growth and prevented follicular atresia, without granulosa or oocyte apoptosis detected in phases D1 and D2. Large and numerous follicles with hyperplasic granulosa and theca cell layers were the rule under FSH over-stimulation. After LH treatment, a series of well developed corpora lutea, although not functional, followed to the super-ovulation, and one day later, in phase E, these corpora lutea constituted a large fraction of the ovarian volume, much greater than the fraction usually observed in a physiological cycle. A large proportion of corpora lutea exhibited massive apoptosis, likely induced by the progesterone surge at proestrus evening 9 ; . There is ample evidence that luteal regression involves apoptotic mechanisms in cycling rat ovaries 25; 40; 41 ; . In summary, ovary morphological changes during the ovarian cycle describe a process in which the follicles undergo a clear cycle with two sequential phases: proliferation and apoptosis. The general functional characteristics of ovary respiration and of ovary mitochondria, isolated from whole rat ovaries by using conventional methodology, are reported here. The lack of previous information is likely due to the limited amount of tissue of rodent ovaries. The clinical interest is evident, Seifer et al. 38 ; showed that women over the age of 38 have granulosa cells that show a substantial increase in mitochondrial lesions, determined as deletions in mitochondrial DNA, as compared with women of 34 years and younger. Mitochondrial DNA damage is considered a marker of oxidative stress and damage 2 and provigil.
